Have you experienced serious side effects while taking heartburn medications such as Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix, or Dexilant? These proton pump inhibitors (“PPI”) and others have been linked to an increased risk of serious kidney injuries and some forms of cancer. A series of recent studies have found that patients who take a PPI drug may be significantly more likely to suffer kidney damage, including the development of chronic kidney disease and, ultimately, experience kidney failure. PPI lawsuits accuse pharmaceutical manufacturers of disregarding medical evidence with the sole aim of increasing corporate profits.

  • A recently published study of millions of PPI patients found that those who had been prescribed a PPI were approximately 250% more likely to develop esophageal cancer.

  • Daily PPI use was associated with a 4.55 times greater risk of cancer than baseline, and became as high as an 8-fold greater risk if the drugs were taken for more than three years.

  • "Many observational studies have found adverse effects associated with PPIs," says pharmacoepidemiologist Stephen Evans from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who wasn't part of the research.

A team of public health researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have discovered a link between proton pump inhibitors and an increased risk of death. Analyzing patient medial records from the Department of Veterans Affairs, this group of scientists found that compared to people who took H2 blockers, PPI patients may have a 25% increased risk of death.
